The Computational Ancient Languages Laboratory develops and applies methods from natural language processing, machine learning, and corpus linguistics to analyse ancient textual sources at scale. Our research covers a broad range of tasks, including automatic language and dialect identification, morphological annotation and lemmatization, text dating and provenance detection, OCR, and the construction of machine-readable corpora and annotated treebanks for under-resourced ancient languages. We also employ computational techniques such as social network analysis and distributional semantics to study the societies and cultures behind the texts. The laboratory grew out of two major research initiatives at the University of Helsinki: Team 1 of the Centre of Excellence in Ancient Near Eastern Empires (ANEE) and the ERC-funded Digital Grammar of Greek Documentary Papyri (PapyGreek) project, and currently works with languages such as Sumerian, Akkadian, ancient Greek, and ancient Egyptian.
