From October 21-23, 2024, a three-day ESSA Summer School provided an in-depth training program for 12 MSc and PhD students from partner institutions, held at ILRI’s Kapiti Research Station and Wildlife Conservancy in Machakos, Kenya. Led by eight experienced lecturers and professors, the course focused on the sources and sinks of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in African pastoral systems.
The training covered critical topics including the primary sources of CO₂, CH₄, and N₂O emissions within pastoral landscapes, their driving factors, and modern methods for emission estimation. Designed for advanced MSc students and early-stage PhD students specializing in environmental sciences, particularly in GHG quantification, the course aimed to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of emission sources and their management in pastoral contexts.
This initiative highlights ESSA’s commitment to building expertise in climate science and sustainable agricultural practices across Africa.
