Johan Kotze has broad experience in urban ecological research, primarily investigating beetles and understorey vegetation in urban remnant forests. Additionally, he is involved in three projects:
- ECOGRAD – the ability of urban green space, such as urban parks, in providing ecosystem services
- GLUSEEN – an international collaborative project on the effects of urban environments on decomposition and soil community structure
- the Fifth Dimension – green infrastructure, particularly the diversity of vegetation and invertebrates on green roofs.
Kotze teaches urban ecosystem ecology, a field course on urban ecological issues and a basic course on statistical analysis. He has supervised 16 MSc and 4 PhD students thus far.
