Curriculum

TRANSMED curriculum is designed to provide

  • understanding in medical sciences and clinical practice from the point of view of a researcher
  • understanding of up-to-date translational research methodologies
  • skills in scientific reasoning and critical analysis of scientific literature
  • knowledge for application of the regulatory and ethical aspects of biomedical and clinical research
  • fluency in scientific and medical terminologies
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling you to find employment in an international and interdisciplinary professional setting

The common studies (35 ECTS) form the basis for all specialisations.

Common studies include basic topics in biomedicine and public health, such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and epidemiology. More clinical topics are dealt with in courses of medical genetics and laboratory medicine. Research skills are promoted through methods courses such as statistics and bioinformatics, but also through consideration of ethical and legal aspects in research, and in interactive seminars with distinguished authors of high-quality research papers.

Introduction to Clinical Investigation

The scope of specialisation is 60 - 80 ECTS, including thesis.

For each specialisation, you need to include specific courses from the module Mechanisms of Human Disease.  The specialisation also includes learning advanced research methodology within a research group, clinical encounters in the Helsinki University Hospital mentored by clinical teachers, and practice in scientific discussion and presentation (both oral and in writing) in a research proposal examination, master’s thesis seminars and your thesis.

Optional studies (max 20 ECTS) can be selected to support the chosen spesialisation or to widen the scope of studies. Optional courses and study modules are arranged by TRANSMED and other programmes, such as Master's Programmes in Neuroscience, Life Science Informatics and Genetics and Molecular Biosciences.
