TENURE TRACK OR FULL PROFESSOR IN CRIME AND PUBLIC POLICY

The field of crime and public policy studies the actions of public authorities in the control of crime, covering both the criminal justice system and other societal means of crime control.
At the core of crime control policy is the system of criminal sanctions and control based on criminal law. It covers areas like developments in criminal law, as well as the functioning of institutions that execute criminal proceedings, such as the police, the prosecutor, the judiciary, and the agencies carrying out sanctions. Crime control policy also utilizes other instruments, such as social and health policies, which also belong to the research field. Research in crime and public policy studies and evaluates the development, legitimacy, functionality, effectiveness, and costs of crime control policy instruments.
The successful candidate is expected to have conducted high-quality and versatile research that opens new perspectives to crime control policy. Both the breadth of the crime and public policy research and the ability to fruitfully combine legal and social research perspectives will be valued. The familiarity with Finnish and Nordic crime control policies and criminal justice systems, a high level of methodological competence, and the ability to utilize KRIMO's access to unique administrative register data generated by the authorities will be greatly appreciated.
The tasks of the position include the development of crime and public policy research, the teaching of crime and public policy in the faculties of Social Sciences and Law, as well as serving as an expert in the preparation of legislation and public policies as well as in public debates.
An appointee to the position of assistant/associate professor within the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant/associate professorships shall demonstrate their capability and motivation as regards an academic career through publications and other means.
An appointee to a full professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and possess top-level scholarly qualifications and experience in the supervision of scientific research, along with the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching as well as to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary to serve as academic leaders.
To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good English skills. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish or Swedish, he/she is expected to acquire moderate proficiency within a reasonable time after the appointment. Support for language studies is offered.
When assessing the qualifications of each applicant, attention will be paid to:
• scientific publications
• success in obtaining external research funding
• leading of scientific research
• international research experience
• activity in the academic community
• teaching experience, supervision of theses and dissertations and other pedagogical merits
• leadership and interaction skills
• experience of serving as an expert in crime control policy

WHAT WE OFFER
Annual gross salary for a full professor varies between 70,000 and 96,000 euros, and for an assistant/associate professor between 58,000 and 69,000 euros, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
