Tvärminne zoological station (www.helsinki.fi/tvarminne) belongs to the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences and is a marine field station located on the Hanko Peninsula at the entrance to the Gulf of Finland. It serves as a centre for a large variety of high quality biological research and offers facilities for field courses and seminars. The station is open all year round and hosts national as well as international researchers. Questions related to the Baltic Sea are central for the activities at the station.

RESEARCH TECHNICIAN

For a permanent position starting 12.3.2018 or according to agreement.

We are looking for a research technician to support a diverse range of marine research activities. The duties of the technician include boat transports, including skippering of the research vessel and the hover craft at the station, field sampling, responsibility for automatic data loggers in the field, assisting of researchers and courses, and service and maintenance of boats and field equipment. It is partly possible to get the necessary training while working. In 2019, the duties will involve training related to the introduction of the station’s new research vessel (18 m catamaran). In addition to a range of practical skills, working at the field station requires dedication, ability to adapt to changing working conditions and tasks, and good problem-solving ability. The daily duties require capacity to work independently as well as in a team. The ability to learn new skills is essential.

We are looking for a person with a suitable university or applied degree in environmental sciences, or with another appropriate degree or corresponding experience. We value experience of environmental research and fieldwork at sea, and the ability to adapt to the seasonality of the different tasks. A skipper’s certificate for domestic service is considered a great advantage (it is also possible to get this qualification while working). We assume good English language skills; other language skills are considered an advantage. In addition, we are looking for a person with a positive attitude, flexibility and attention to detail, ability to tackle challenges independently, but also with a desire to contribute to the team spirit at the station.

The salary is based on levels 5 – 8 of the job requirements scheme for other personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities and the starting salary will be ca. 2 250 - 3 000 euros per month depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. A four-month trial period will be applied.
