The Faculty of Arts (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-arts) of the University of Helsinki is
Finland’s oldest institution for teaching and research in the humanities and the largest in terms
of the structure and range of disciplines. It is also a significant international community fostering
research, education and cultural interaction.
The Faculty of Arts carries out research and teaching in the languages and literatures of Europe
and other parts of the world, totalling close to 40 languages. In addition, a general theory of
linguistics, translation studies and comparative literature is being developed.

PROFESSOR OR ASSISTANT / ASSOCIATE
PROFESSOR IN LATIN
The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent professorship or a fixed-term
associate/assistant professorship (tenure track system), depending on his or her qualifications

In addition to the Latin language, the field of the position includes all literary and documentary
(e.g., epigraphic) material written in Latin from the Roman archaic period through antiquity, the
Middle Ages and the Renaissance all the way to neo-Latin.
The appointee must be an internationally oriented researcher with a broad perspective and a thorough knowledge of the Latin language, its use and history. As a teacher and researcher, the appointee must have the ability to analyse and describe Latin-language material from the perspective of both language and culture. In addition, the appointee must be able to lead cross-disciplinary research utilising Latin sources.
The professor or assistant/associate professor will work at the Department of Languages, Faculty of Arts and will provide instruction in the Bachelor’s and Master’s Programmes in Languages.
An appointee to the position of assistant/associate professor within the tenure track system
shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have
the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant/associate
professorships shall demonstrate their capability and motivation as regards an academic career
through publications and other means.
An appointee to a full professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and possess top-level scholarly
qualifications and experience in the supervision of scientific research, along with the ability to
provide top-level research-based teaching as well as to supervise theses and dissertations. In
addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of
research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills
necessary to serve as academic leaders.
When assessing the qualifications of each applicant, attention will be paid to both scholarly and
teaching qualifications. Scholarly qualifications include scientific publications and other research
results of scientific value, success in obtaining external research funding, international research
experience as well as international elected positions. When considering the teaching qualifications of each applicant, attention will be focused on teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as participation in doctoral education. The applicant’s leadership and interaction skills as well as activity in the academic community will also be taken into account.
To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good English skills.
If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish or Swedish, he/she is expected to acquire moderate

Annual gross salary for an assistant/associate professor amounts to 50,000 - 68,500 euros and for full professor to 64,000 - 96,000 euros, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
