Founded in 1640, the University of Helsinki is one of the best multidisciplinary research universities in the world. The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-agriculture-and-forestry), located on the Viikki campus, promotes the sustainable use of natural resources and human wellbeing through scientific research and research-based teaching. The faculty’s key areas of education and research are food, agricultural, forest and environmental sciences, economics, and biotechnology. The faculty has 2 800 undergraduate and postgraduate students and employs 425 experts.
The Department of Agricultural Sciences (http://www.helsinki.fi/ agriculturalsciences/) operates on Viikki campus, an internationally recognized concentration of biosciences and it employs 100 experts in the field. The research at the Department of Agricultural Sciences includes applied, strategic, and basic aspects. The research of Department is internationally renowned and also nationally important by bringing benefits to agriculture, horticulture and the industries based on them. The department provides a multidisciplinary research environment with up-todate research infrastructure which includes also the Viikki Research Farm.
The Department of Agricultural Sciences, University of Helsinki, invites applications for position of
PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING
The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent professorship or a fixed-term associate/assistant professorship (tenure track system), depending on his or her qualifications and career stage.
The duties of the professor/associate professor/assistant professor will include scientific research, teaching based on it and participation in international collaboration and community engagement in the field. In addition to teaching lectures and courses, the professor/associate professor/assistant professor will supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students and participate in the development of Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes.
According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, the ability to provide top-level teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations as well as the documentation of international cooperation in the research field that the appointee represents. Holder of professorship shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader.
An appointee to an associate/assistant professorship have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. Other requirements shall include the ability and motivation to pursue a scientific career, as demonstrated through publications or otherwise.
When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research outputs, teaching experience and pedagogical training as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Furthermore, account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and elected positions in Finnish and international organisations.
According to the Government Decree on Universities, professors/associate/assistant professors must be proficient in Finnish. They must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must also have good English skills.
The professor’s salary will be based on levels 8−10, and the associate/assistant professor’s on level 7, of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.
