The University of Helsinki Faculty of Arts ( is Finland’s oldest and largest unit of teaching and research in the arts in terms of the organisation and selection of its disciplines. The Faculty is also a significant international community of research, education and culture.

The Faculty of Arts invites applications for the position of


endowed by Maija Lehtonen. The appointment will be for a fixed term of up to three years as of 1 August 2020 (or as agreed). The duration of employment (one to three years) depends on the appointee’s research plan.

The position is geared to researchers of the French language, French-language literature, the history of France, Franco-Finnish cultural relations or Finnish literature. The position will be financed by the Maija Lehtonen Fund, which is based on a bequest of more than €4 million from Professor Maija Lehtonen and supports the above disciplines.

The appointee’s duties will include research work based on his or her research plan and research cooperation within the University of Helsinki in the above research fields (at least one). In addition, the postdoctoral researcher or university researcher will provide teaching and contribute to the completion of other shared tasks.

The appointee must hold a doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work as well as have the teaching skills necessary for the position. If appointed to the position of university researcher, the successful applicant must also have the ability to lead a research group and obtain external research funding.

When assessing applicants, particular consideration will also be given to evidence of international cooperation as well as concrete cooperation plans with teaching and research staff at the Faculty of Arts, as indicated in the research plan. The appointee must have not only good Finnish or Swedish proficiency, but also excellent French or English proficiency.

The salary will be based on level 5 (postdoctoral researcher) or levels 6–7 (university researcher) of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance.
