The University of Helsinki, founded in 1640, is one of the world’s leading universities for multidisciplinary research. The university has an international academic community of 40,000 students and staff members. The University of Helsinki offers comprehensive services to its employees, including occupational health care and health insurance, sports facilities, and opportunities for professional development. The International Staff Services office (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/university/working-at-the-university) assists employees from abroad with their transition to work and life in Finland.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-science/faculty/mathematics-and-st...) at the Faculty of Science, is the largest department of mathematical sciences in Finland. The department invites applications for

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER (mathematics/mathematical physics)

for a full-time three-year position. The employment is scheduled to commence in September 2019 but upon mutual agreement the start can also be later in 2019.

Position description

The work will be conducted in the Mathematical physics research group (https://wiki.helsinki.fi/display/mathphys) together with professor Jani Lukkarinen (https://researchportal.helsinki.fi/en/persons/jani-lukkarinen) as part of the Matter and Materials (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/matter-and-materials) profiling action funded by the Academy of Finland. The Mathematical physics research group comprises of four faculty members and thirteen post-doctoral researchers and PhD students. In addition to the above Matter and Materials profiling action, the group is affiliated with the Centre of Excellence in Analysis and Dynamics Research (https://wiki.helsinki.fi/display/andy/Home) as well as with the AtMath Collaboration (https://wiki.helsinki.fi/display/atmath/Atmospheric+Mathematics) formed by research groups working in mathematics and in atmospheric sciences.

Research carried out by the group members covers a wide range of mathematical models used in physics. In this call, we are looking for a researcher interested in working on dynamics and transport properties related to phonons and other wave evolutions, and/or in the related kinetic theory. The postdoctoral researchers´ work encompasses conducting research in collaboration with members of the research group and a small amount of teaching (approximately 24 hours of lecturing a year).

Requirements

A successful candidate will have experience in one or more of the following mathematical topics related to the project: 1) analysis of evolution equations involving nonlinearities, 2) perturbation theory or related graph methods, 3) stochastic particle systems, or 4) mathematical kinetic theory. In addition, familiarity with physics of such transport phenomena will be beneficial: such topics include equilibrium and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, kinetic theory, and solid state physics.

Salary

The salary of successful candidate will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system for Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The starting salary will be approximately 3300 – 3700 €/month.
