The University of Helsinki, founded in 1640, is one of the world’s leading universities for multidisciplinary research. The university has an international academic community of 40,000 students and staff members.
Neuroscience Center in the Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HILIFE) is an independent research organization. Research in Neuroscience Center spans scales from molecular and cellular neuroscience to developmental, cognitive, and systems neuroscience.

The Palva group has a longstanding interest in the comprehensive understanding of systems-level neuronal basis of cognition. Specifically, the research is centered in resolving large-scale architecture of oscillatory brain dynamics and its functional significance in cognition and behavior in humans and recently also in mice models.

The research groups of Satu Palva at the Neuroscience Center, HiLIFE invites applications for

1-2 PHD or POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER

The PhD or postdoctoral researchers will participate in Academy of Finland funded project “Systems-level neuronal basis of short-term memory and working memory”. The objective of the researcher is to carry out research on large-scale neuronal oscillations and connectomics using magnetoencephalography (MEG) in association with computational modelling and TMS.
We are looking for enthusiastic, innovative, and strongly motivated postdoctoral researcher or PhD with prior experience to join our multidisciplinary research team.

The position is available for 2 + 1 years starting January 2021.

PhD or Postdoctoral applicants should possess MSc or PhD degree, respectively, in a relevant field (engineering, cognitive neuroscience, computer science, neurophysiology or similar). We expect prior experience in MEG, EEG or in vivo electrophysiology, neuronal oscillations and good signal processing and programming skills. Prior experience in connectomics, computational modelling and TMS is considered an advantage. Post-doctoral researcher should have a proven academic track-record in these fields with publications in international scientific journals. The position require also good communication skills with written and spoken English.

This position will provide multiple opportunities for collaborations with potential lab visits abroad and cross-disciplinary scientific exchange. Candidate is offered access to a wide variety of methodologies and advanced techniques, appropriate supervision and help in career development.

The salary of the successful candidate will be determined by the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system for Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The starting salary is about 2200 – 3200 euros/month for the PhD researcher and 3200 – 3800 euros/month for the postdoctoral researcher, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. A six-month trial period will be applied.

Application should include the following documents as a single pdf file: (1) a motivation letter, (2) a CV and publication list, and (3) the names and email addresses of two persons capable of providing a recommendation for the applicant.

To apply, please submit the application through the University of Helsinki electronic recruitment system by clicking on Apply for job. Internal applicants (i.e., current employees of the University of Helsinki) please submit your applications through the SAP HR portal.

Deadline for application is 31.10.2020, but review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
