The Organismal and Evolutionary Biology Research Programme at the University of Helsinki invites applications for a
for a fixed term until the end of June 2019. The bioinformatician will join the research groups of Dr Marjo Saastamoinen (http://www.helsinki.fi/life-history-evolution) and Prof. Anna-Liisa Laine ( https://allaine.it.helsinki.fi/). The position can be filled immediately and no later than 1st of June 2018.
The position will be focused on the genomics analyses carried out within the Glanville fritillary (Melitaea cinxia) butterfly genome sequencing project and the ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata) genome and transcriptome projects. Activities associated with the position include genome annotation, comparative genomics, transcriptome analysis, and spatiotemporal analysis of population genomic data. The work will be conducted within established research teams at University of Helsinki and it provides ample opportunities for further high-level scientific training.
The successful applicant should have completed MSc or PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, biostatics, genetics or relevant fields. Previous experience with the analysis of next generation sequencing data is required. An ideal candidate should have experience in at least one of the following areas:
- whole genome sequencing projects
- transcriptome analyses
- comparative genomics
- analysis of large biological datasets.
A proven competence in scripting/programming (Python, Perl, R) and experience in working in the Linux/UNIX environment is essential. Good collaboration skills and fluency in English, both oral and in writing are required. The bioinformatician will work as a part of the teams at the University of Helsinki, and hence great social skills are required.
For a bioinformatician, without PhD qualifications, the starting salary will be 2700 - 3100 euros/month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. For a post doc the starting salary will be 3300 euros/month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. A four-month trial period will be applied.
