The University of Helsinki is among the leading multidisciplinary research universities in the world. In addition to its 11 faculties, the University includes several independent institutes, some of which are jointly operated with other universities. Some 35,000 students are currently pursuing an undergraduate or a postgraduate degree at the University of Helsinki.

Measured in number of students and teachers, the Faculty of Science at the University of Helsinki is the largest science faculty in Finland. There are some 6,000 students taking a basic degree. Out of them, some 1,000 are postgraduates. There are some 500 international students, and over 200 researchers and teachers from abroad.

The University of Helsinki has established two new research centers. Institute for Atmospheric and Earth system Research (INAR) is a multi- and interdisciplinary research unit based in physics, chemistry, meteorology and forest sciences in the University of Helsinki. INAR aims to strengthen the internationally leading, integrated multidisciplinary research environment for atmospheric and Earth system science and to feed in scientific results for the national and international environment and climate policy. It performs multiscale research from molecular to global scale and focuses on climate change, air quality, biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem processes. The scientific objective of INAR is to reduce the scientific uncertainties related to climate change at global scale by quantifying the essential feedback mechanisms between the atmospheric processes and changing functioning of biosphere and to increase knowledge on air quality – climate interactions and feedback. Research and high international impact of INAR is based on the unique, comprehensive and continuous data from SMEAR field stations. INAR leads two European ESFRI research infrastructures. There are around 20 professors and 150 researchers in different career stages associated to INAR in the University of Helsinki. INAR has national partners in Finnish Meteorological Institute, University of Eastern Finland and Tampere University of Technology.

The new Helsinki Data Science Center (HiDATA) aims to create a world-class research and research-based education hub of data science in Helsinki, enabling to overcome technological challenges brought about by the digitalisation of society. Data science is an interdisciplinary field about computational processes to extract knowledge and insights from data. HiDATA Center is affiliated with the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT and with the Department of Computer Science of the University of Helsinki.

The Faculty of Science invites applications for the position of

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR/ ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/ PROFESSOR in Computer Science and Atmospheric Sciences (Computational methods with applications to Earth system and weather modelling)

The position is joint between INAR and HiDATA. The professor will work in INAR’s and HiDATA’s interdisciplinary research programs and teach in master and doctoral programs related to INAR and HiDATA fields of sciences.

The successful applicant may be appointed to a professorship or a fixed-term associate/assistant professorship (tenure track system consisting of two stages, each 3 – 5 years), depending on his or her qualifications and career stage.

The field of the research covers the development of new computational methods particularly suited for large-scale atmospheric modelling. These can include design of new solution algorithms, novel processing and data mining of output data, or interfacing models with observations. The developments are expected to accelerate extraction of new knowledge in science questions relevant for INAR, such as high-impact weather events in the current and future climate, or impact of aerosols on atmospheric circulation. Expertise in multi-scale modelling using weather and Earth system models, as well as design of solution algorithms is appreciated. The professor will contribute to the INAR efforts where several large-scale models, including OpenIFS and EC-Earth, are applied and further developed.

A professor will carry out and supervise scientific research, provide teaching based on it, follow developments in research and participate in societal interaction in his/her field and in international cooperation.

A professor must hold a doctoral degree and have high-level academic qualifications, experience in heading scientific research. The professor must also be able to provide research-based teaching of high quality, supervise dissertations and theses as well as evidence of international cooperation in the field.

An assistant/associate professor must hold a doctoral degree and ability for independent scientific work as well as teaching skills required by the position. Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected to have competence and motivation for scientific career proven by scientific publications and other academic activities.

When assessing the qualifications of each candidate, attention will be paid to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching materials, other teaching merits, and, if deemed necessary, teaching skills as demonstrated in a lecture, as well as participation in doctoral education. Furthermore, attention will be paid to the applicant’s activities within the research community, success in obtaining research funding, research work abroad and elected positions in international organisations.

Professor’s salary will be based on levels 8 – 10 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of the Finnish universities. An average starting salary for a newly appointed professor is ca. 5700 euros/month. The salary of an assistant (associate) professor is based on level 7 with the starting salary of about 4700 euros/month (5200 euros/month).
