The internationally esteemed Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Helsinki is Finland’s most multidisciplinary unit of research and teaching in educational sciences and teacher education. We provide undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education that qualifies students for both the teaching profession and other positions requiring general academic expertise. Some 600 students complete an undergraduate degree at the Faculty each year. We also offer the pedagogical studies required to qualify as a teacher to students majoring in other faculties’ disciplines. Approximately 600 students studying to become a subject teacher annually complete these studies at the Faculty to obtain teaching qualifications.
The Faculty of Educational Sciences invites applications for the position of
1-2 DOCTORAL STUDENTS
for a fixed term of two years beginning on 1 January 2019 (or starting point as agreed). The position will be placed in Local Educational Ethos: a study on well-performing comprehensive schools in disadvantaged neighbourhoods (LEE) project, funded by Academy of Finland.
The duties of the doctoral student will include dissertation work, the production of data for the project, publishing together with other project researchers, and responsibility for project communications together with the other project researchers. The duties may also include teaching and other tasks. Teaching may account for up to 5% of the annual working hours.
The position requires an applicable second-cycle (Master’s) degree, the ability and motivation to conduct scientific research, and proficiency in spoken and written Finnish or Swedish, and English. Strong methodological skills (particularly qualitative methods), interest in research on sociology of education and the ethnographic research approach as well as good online communication skills will be considered assets.
The appointee must hold the right to pursue doctoral studies at the University of Helsinki. If the appointee does not hold this right, he or she must obtain it within the trial period of six months (read more about the application process https://www.helsinki.fi/en/research/doctoral-education/doctoral-schools-... ). In such a case, the employment contract may initially be concluded under the title of research assistant for the duration of the trial period.
The salary for the present post will be based on levels 2 to 4 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. There will be a six-month trial period for the position.
