Think Corner is a meeting place for research, the public and society located in the heart of Helsinki. Think Corner welcomes everyone to see, hear about and experience University research. Built around scientific themes and individual events, Think Corner’s programme deals with the versatile world-class research conducted at the University as well as with topical, red-hot issues. We bring science to the street level with informative sessions, panel discussions, workshops and exhibitions, aiming to present a broad spectrum of science in an easily understandable manner.

Science = experience

In 2012 the University of Helsinki made world-class research easily accessible to all Helsinki residents by opening Think Corner on Aleksanterinkatu for the duration of the World Design Capital year. The first year was a resounding success, with the facilities hosting over 700 presentations and more than 400 workshops on various academic and scientific topics. The space, with its large windows, energised the corner of Aleksanterinkatu and Fabianinkatu and drew 300 to 500 visitors daily. Think Corner continued on the street level of Porthania from June 2013 onward.

In April 2015, Think Corner returned to Aleksanterinkatu where it will stage a number of events during the 375th anniversary year. Think Corner Porthania continued as a setting for various happenings and as the home base of the Helsinki Challenge idea competition. In the beginning of 2016, Think Corner Porthania will relaunch as a work and development environment for the designers of the Think Corner 2017 project.

Think Corner activities will be further expanded. In 2017, the same year that Finland celebrates its centenary, a new and increasingly versatile Think Corner will be opened in new facilities at Yliopistonkatu 4. Known as the Administration Building until recently, the outdated facilities will undergo a full renovation ahead of the opening. An architectural competition was organised for the renovation, and JKMM Architects emerged as the winner. The building’s lower floors will feature the new Think Corner, including a centre for scientific events, a café and restaurant, as well as partnership and work spaces. The new Think Corner will follow proven good practices in science communication and community relations by highlighting not only research results but also the research process. It will offer society new, perhaps still unrecognised ways to cooperate with the University. Think Corner’s future services will be planned jointly by the University community and its partners. In February 2015, a service design project was launched with Kuudes Kerros, a brand design consultancy. Follow the Think Corner 2017 blog.
