Contemporary Russian politics under review at the University of Helsinki

The international conference organized by Aleksanteri Institute will focus to contemporary Russian politics and recent trends and developments.

There will be four main themes in the conference: political regime dynamics; state-society relations; territorial development of Russian state, and governing the state.

FiDiPro Professorship “Politics and Governance in Russia in a Comparative Perspective” (funded by the Academy of Finland) at the Aleksanteri Institute, University of Helsinki organizes an international conference entitled "Critical Issues in the Research of Contemporary Russian Politics".

− Our aim is to go beyond conventional understanding of political development and stereotypes. We will focus to various actors, policies and institutions, and the conference will have a comparative dimension: developments to take place in Russia are not completely unique, but can be compared, Professor Vladimir Gel'man comments.

The program includes, for example, the following presentations:

  • Gulnaz Sharafutdinova (King’s College, London): Corruption, Governance and Second Best Institutions in Russia’s Regions
  • Graeme Robertson (University of North Carolina Chapel Hill): Getting the Opposition Together: Protest Coordination in Hybrid Regimes
  • Ella Paneyakh (Higher School of Economics, St.Petersburg): Governmentality in Russian State Organizations: Law Enforcement, Regulative Bodies, and Social Welfare
  • Brian Taylor (Syracuse University): Transformation of the Russian State
