The second and final Call for Papers for HEPP2 is now open!

9.12.2020
The Second Helsinki Conference on Emotions, Populism and Polarisation (HEPP2) will take place online on 4-8 May 2021, and our second Call for Papers is open. We welcome both abstracts and the submission of panel proposals.

Following on from the successful First Helsinki Conference on Emotions, Populism and Polarisation on "Emotions, Populism, and Polarised Politics, Media, and Culture" in August 2019, the conference series will continue in May 2021 and August 2022.

Due to both the continuation of COVID-19 – related restrictions and the calibre of abstracts we received during the first Call for Papers, for HEPP2 we have moved to an all-online format with extended conference dates of Tuesday, 4 May to Saturday, 8 May 2021.

Apply during this second Call for Papers here by 31 January 2021.

The subtheme of the conference is ‘Mainstreaming Populism in the Era of Transnational Crises’ to reflect on the relationship between pandemia and other current and past crises with populism. The conference will assemble a range of international researchers at all career stages, with the aim of examining populism particularly from a discursive and cultural approach. The conference encourages papers that approach the following and related themes:

  • Mainstreaming populism
  • Politics, populism, and social and political movements
  • Radical democracy
  • Subjectivity, affects, and gender
  • Cultural populism
  • Populism in a COVID-19 and post-pandemic world
  • Political communication and media in times of crisis and polarisation
  • Hybrid media and the polarisation of information
  • The re-articulation and politicisation of Europe
  • Populism, common grounds and communities of knowledge
  • Empathy as a counter to polarisation and/or antagonism

We especially welcome contributions from early-career researchers.

Abstracts are also invited for the Crisis, Security and Conflict Communication Working Group of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR)'s panel at the HEPP2, on the subject of “Inequality, Crisis and Technology at a Crossroads”. Details for the submission of abstracts to the panel are available here.
