Ilkka Kärrylä is employed in the new research project Neoliberalism in the Nordics: developing an absent theme led by Jenny Andersson (Uppsala University) and funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond. The project aims to develop a new research theme around the expressions of neoliberalism in the Northern European periphery, by building a strong team of intellectual, conceptual, political, economic, social and cultural historians working across Sweden, Denmark, and Finland
Ilkka will study how the term 'neoliberalism' has been used in Nordic political languages (parliamentary debate, newspapers) to describe ideology and policy. Another line of research will concentrate on terms and concepts referring to different actors or subjects, such as 'citizen', 'consumer', 'worker' and 'entrepreneur'. How have the roles and mutual relations of these figures changed in Nordic political thought and language since the 1970s, and has neoliberal thinking influenced these changes?
