The Baltic Bridge research collaboration aims to strengthen links between the universities of Helsinki and Stockholm in the field of marine sciences. A key part of the collaboration involves joint field and laboratory campaigns during which resources and expertise are shared. The collaboration also provides opportunities for students to meet scientists from the partner institute and to gain valuable research experience. In this context, ABRU MSc student Luukas Lintumäki took part in the research cruise of RV Electra together with Tom Jilbert on 22 September. Luukas' project focuses on reconstructing past changes in inputs of terrestrial organic matter to the coastal zone of the Baltic, and their impact on biogeochemical processes in coastal sediments. Luukas and Tom sampled 5-meter sediment cores taken by Electra from a location close to Tvärminne Zoological Station, the University of Helsinki base for the Baltic Bridge collaboration.
