Seminar series part 3: Investigating language ecologies: From fieldwork to sociolinguistic questionnaire

The final session of the three-part GramAdapt seminar series was held on December 10th, 2020 via Zoom. The session included talks by Rosa Vallejos, Itxaso Rodríguez-Ordóñez, and GramAdapt researcher Eri Kashima.

Some of the main goals of the ERC-funded project Linguistic Adaptation (GramAdapt) are to develop methodologies for comparing sociolinguistic environments and linguistic structures to one another, and to produce new analyses that will enable researching linguistic adaptation in principled ways. To discuss and co-develop these themes we are organizing a series of three seminars in November-December 2020. The invited speakers represent a wide range of fields working on language typology, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, and language learning.

The third session of the series was titled “Investigating language ecologies: From fieldwork to sociolinguistic questionnaire”. The talks were followed by a general panel discussion. The talks were recorded, and all of the videos and slides from the presentations are available below in the end of the article.

Prof. Rosa Vallejos (The University of New Mexico) presented about documentary fieldwork on language contact situations and shared her experiences on working with Amazonian languages Kukama and Secoya and their contact with Spanish.

Dr. Itxaso Rodríguez-Ordóñez (California State University Long Beach) discussed the dynamics of language contact, sharing insights from new learners of the Basque language.

Finally, Dr. Eri Kashima of GramAdapt presented the GramAdapt sociolinguistic questionnaire, and discussed its contents and aims.
