Compendium heroicum traces the intellectual history of heroism

New publication Risto Saarinen and Nina Niedermeier

On May 31, 2019, Risto Saarinen and Nina Niedermeier published a comprehensive intellectual history of the so-called heroic virtue in European Protestant (Saarinen) and Catholic (Niedermeyer) traditions. Their entries are included in the Compendium heroicum, an open access encyclopedia of heroes and heroism. This German reference work, published by the center "Helden, Heroisierungen, Heroismen" at the University of Freiburg, traces the history of heroism from Greco-Roman antiquity to modern superheroes. Its historical emphasis lies on the early modern period, an age in which heroism was omnipresent.
