The University of Helsinki has been ranked 99th in the Times Higher Education World University Ranking (THE).
The Times Higher Education ranking uses 13 performance indicators which measure the university’s reputation, the volume and quality of its research, student numbers and number of doctoral degrees per teacher, as well as the percentage of international students.
The University of Helsinki dropped nine places from last year, ranking as the 99th. This is the result of decreases in the University’s funding from companies and lower numbers of international students. However, in the important reputation indicator, the University of Helsinki improved its ranking by 14 places, to 101st.
In the ranking, the University of Helsinki was the fourth best university in the Nordic countries, surpassed by the Karolinska Institutet (40), Uppsala University (87) and Lund University (98), all in Sweden. The University of Helsinki ranked higher than any other Finnish university. Aalto University ranked 181st.
Unlike most other university rankings, the current THE ranking is topped not by institutions in the United States, but by two UK universities, Oxford (1) and Cambridge (2).
The University of Helsinki has been ranked among the top 100 universities in the world in several international rankings.
