The DigiTala in action - automatic speaking assessment supporting integration project (DTA for short) is looking for integration training teachers and adult Finnish learners in integration training, who are interested in participating in the development of a new mobile application.
The goal of the DTA project is to develop a mobile application that enables training that is independent of time and place. The application enables learners of Finnish with immigrant background to independently practice pronunciation and speech production in Finnish. The app is also suitable for assessment, which means that it offers unique opportunities for both the learner and the teacher. The application automatically assesses speech and provides the learner with a CEFR level assessment, as well as indicates the learner’s strengths and needs for practice.
To develop the application, the research team needs new speech data from Finnish learners at all levels in integration training. Therefore, we ask you, integration training teachers, to chart your students’ interest to participate in the project. Participation entails for example recording of speaking tasks.
Why participate?
- We are interested in the participants’ opinions on the tasks and automatic speaking assessment.
- Participation supports the development of the mobile app and contributes to science.
As a teacher, your role is to act as liaison between the students and the project, and to help collect the speech data. We will organize an online infosession where you will be able to ask questions about the project. Please let us know if you and/or your students are interested in participating in the project by 15 April 2025 by emailing the project planner Minka Lindroos (minka.lindroos@helsinki.fi).
Participation is voluntary
Participation is voluntary. The student may choose not to participate, to withdraw from the study or to suspend participation without giving any reason at any time during the research. There will be no negative consequences. Participants will be informed in detail about the project and about the collection and processing of their personal data.
