The newly funded NOS-HS funded project entitled “Nordic Research Network on Digitalising Childhoods (DigiChild)”, led by Professor Kristiina Kumpulainen (University of Helsinki) launched its website (www.digichild.net) on March, 2019.
The core topics of the research network concern timely issues around digitalising childhoods, such as inequalities and opportunities of digital technologies and media for children’s learning and education, civic engagement, social life and leisure, the impact of digitalisation on children’s physical and mental wellbeing and health as well as safety, security and privacy and research methods and ethics to study childhood in the digital age. The network includes leading Nordic scholars from the field, from University of Southern Denmark, University of Oslo, University of Helsinki, University of Gothenburg and University of Iceland. The project aims at exchanging and disseminating the latest research knowledge by arranging exploratory workshops. It recently had its first highly interesting and productive workshop in Sweden, hosted at the University of in Gothenburg, Department of Education, Communication and Learning. The event included open for public keynote speeches by Professor Jackie Marsh (University of Sheffield, UK) on “Makerspaces in the early years: Opportunities (and challenges) for developing characteristics of effective learning”, and by Professor Kirsten Drotner (from University of Southern Denmark) on “Children's freedom of speech in the 21st century”. The next workshops will be arranged in Helsinki, Finland in late 2019. The project is carried out from January 2019 to August 2020.
