The Hyytiälä Living Lab is a multidisciplinary research platform built into new massive-timber buildings at the University of Helsinki’s Hyytiälä Forest Station. Continuous sensor measurements generate data on the performance of timber structures, indoor conditions, and the sustainability, climate and wellbeing impacts of wooden construction. The platform supports research, teaching and development related to sustainable wood construction and is part of an international living-lab network.
Viikki Research Farm is the University of Helsinki’s experimental farm located on the Viikki campus in Helsinki. It provides modern farm infrastructure, arable land and animal facilities primarily for research and teaching in agricultural and forest sciences, with a strong focus on environmental impacts, climate and carbon sequestration. The farm offers a unique urban setting for applied research and collaboration.
Muddusjärvi Research Station is located in northern Lapland and is one of the world’s northernmost sites for agricultural and environmental research. The station provides approximately 13 hectares of fields, 700 hectares of forest land and a large water area, supporting research on northern ecosystems, forestry and land use under subarctic conditions. It is administratively part of Viikki Research Farm.
The Viikki research greenhouses and protected research fields offer controlled environments for plant and biomass research, together with the National Plant Phenotyping Infrastructure (NaPPI). The facilities enable high-quality experimental work on plant growth, phenotyping and related processes. External research projects can be carried out under agreed arrangements.
DiAGRI is a research and development infrastructure that combines controlled-environment agriculture with advanced sensing, networking and artificial intelligence. Located on the Viikki campus (and at Metropolia’s Myyrmäki campus), it provides modern growth chambers and digital tools for research on plant responses, automation and data-driven cultivation. The approach and technologies are also relevant for precision applications in forest and biomass research.
Helsinki Think Company Viikki offers free co-working space and event facilities on the Viikki campus for entrepreneurs and anyone developing business ideas. The space is open and accessible, supporting informal collaboration, workshops and innovation-related activities in a university environment.
The University of Helsinki offers selected office and laboratory spaces on the Viikki campus that can be rented by startups, entrepreneurs and external companies. Some of these spaces have previously been used by the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. Enquiries and arrangements are handled by the relevant university unit.
