One year after the Pitching Competition: HYGRON is ready for its next growth phase

A year ago, Vinay Kumar from HYGRON took the stage at the Forest & Nature Tech Pitching Competition to present their innovative solution for energy-efficient cooling. Today, the team is preparing to spin out.

We met , a senior scientist at VTT and the future CEO of , to discuss their progress during the past year and how the Pitching Competition has accelerated the journey.

"A year ago, we were just starting our commercialization journey"

When HYGRON applied to the Forest & Nature Tech Pitching Competition in 2025, the team had just launched their Business Finland Research to Business -project. While the technology had already shown strong potential, the commercialization pathway was still taking shape.

"At that stage, we were exploring different routes to bring our technology to the market. We were speaking with customers, analyzing different market opportunities, and evaluating the best commercializationstrategy. Over the past year, it has become increasingly clear that establishing a spinout company is the right path for us."

HYGRON is developing a membrane-based technology that separates dehumidification from the cooling process, enabling cooling systems to operate more efficiently. The solution can reduce cooling energy consumption by up to 50%, particularly in hot and humid climates.

Steps towards both technology and business readiness

Over the past year, HYGRON has made significant progress not only in technology development but also in building the foundations of a successful business.

"We have significantly increased our technology readiness, but we've also developed a much deeper understanding of our customers, our go-to-market strategy and commercial opportunities. Today, our discussions with investors are at a completely different level than they were a year ago."

According to Kumar, investors increasingly expect research-based teams to demonstrate not only technical excellence but also a clear understanding of customer needs, market potential, and commercial execution.

More than a competition

For HYGRON, the Forest & Nature Tech Pitching Competition was more than a chance to deliver a three-minute pitch.

"The coaching sessions were incredibly valuable. They helped us to improve our storytelling and sharpen the way we communicate our value proposition. The entire process was very professionally organized."

And even more importantly, the competition provided visibility and credibility: "When you're selected to pitch on a recognized stage, and especially when you perform well, it creates what I call ecosystem validation. Investors see that your team can communicate its vision and execute it under pressure. That credibility opens doors."

Following the competition, HYGRON gained new investor contacts and received valuable feedback that helped the team prioritize the next steps before launching the company. Some of those conversations have even progressed into serious investment negotiations.

A valuable opportunity for research-based startups

Kumar encourages other research teams considering commercialization to apply for the competition: "If you're planning to commercialize a research idea or technology through a spinout, I would definitely recommend participating. You'll receive expert coaching, valuable exposure, and the opportunity to connect with investors, entrepreneurs, and other teams facing similar challenges. Whether you're just starting out or already further along your journey, there's a lot to learn."

Applications for the 2026 competition are now open

Forest & Nature Tech Pitching Competition 2026 is now accepting applications from research teams and early-stage startups developing innovative solutions in forest, nature and bioeconomy technologies.
