The Academic Medical Center Helsinki (AMCH), one of the best medical campuses in Europe, brings top research, teaching and medical care together every day. The core of the AMCH’s work is the close cooperation between the University of Helsinki’s Faculty of Medicine, the Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE) and the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS) to provide the very best for its patients.

Research

The robust research expertise of the campus ranges from basic biological research to clinical applications. The research focus areas are malignant growth, the brain and the mind, infection, metabolism and degeneration. The research also covers topics such as determining the etiology of diseases, disease prevention, diagnostics and personalised medicine as well as translational research and drug discovery. Genomic data open many new opportunities in patient care. In addition, research seeks to support the efficacy of care, patient safety, the promotion of health and the functionality of the service system. Corporate cooperation is also generating new operational models on the campus.

Teaching

Both the University and HUS provide teaching on the campus. The goal is to provide both undergraduate and doctoral students with the skills needed in modern diagnostics. The AMCH also emphasises scientific doctoral studies. The degrees provided by the Faculty of Medicine prepare students for careers as certified professionals in health care as physicians, dentists, psychologists and speech therapists. The Faculty also houses a Master’s programme in translational medicine. The medical specialisation training offered on the campus as well as other continuing education for specific professions ensure a high quality of competence as well as the availability of qualified medical staff in the future.
