Scholarships and visit China programs

Through Confucius Institute, students can apply for scholarships for both short-term and long-term studies in China. Participants of the Renmin University International Summer School can apply for the Hanban scholarship or tuition waiver. Confucius Institute scholarships are granted to outstanding Confucius Institute students worldwide for studies in China. Confucius China Studies Scholarships Program Ph.D. Fellowships are currently the most valuable fellowship programs that are available to international students in China. The majority of financial support is provided via the support of specific research and other projects on designated academic areas of Humanities and Social Sciences. 

Confucius Institute also organize visit China programs both for school principals and educators and students.

Confucius Institute Scholarships are granted for studies in China. There are several scholarship categories you may apply. The scholarship will cover, tuition, accommodation fees on campus, monthly allowance, and comprehensive insurance for foreign students.

I. Category & Eligibility 
The scholarship is only open to applicants who have a non-Chinese citizenship and who are between 16 and 35 years old (Applicants who are currently working in a Chinese language teaching position shall not exceed the age of 45).

1. Scholarship for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) Students (2 Academic Years) 
a) Applicant should have a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent 
b) Full scholarship requirements minimum score of 210 on HSK Test (Level 5), and intermediate level in HSKK Test; Partial scholarship requirements minimum score of 180 on HSK Test (Level 5), and intermediate level in HSKK Test.
c) Applicant who is able to provide the employment agreement or certification upon finishing the study from designated working institutions is preferred

2. Scholarship for Bachelor´s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) Students (4 Academic Years)
a) Full scholarship requirements minimum score of 210 on HSK Test (Level 4), and intermediate level in HSKK Test; Partial scholarship requirements minimum score of 180 on HSK Test (Level 4), and intermediate level in HSKK Test.
b) Applicant who is registered student at a Confucius Institute/ classroom is preferred

3. Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study Students (11 Months) 
3.1
a) Application is open to overseas Chinese language teachers and Chinese language related major students
b) A minimum score of 270 in HSK Test (Level 3) and a HSKK Test Score Report
c) This scholarship will prepare students to take the HSK Test (Level 5) and pass with a minimum score of 180.Upon finishing the One-Academic-Year, students who pass the HSK Test (Level 5) are eligible to apply for a Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese Scholarship
d) Students already studying in China from January 1, 2017 are not eligible for this Scholarship
3.2
a) Application is open to students of Chinese translation or Chinese studies
b) Advanced courses in Chinese literature, history and philosophy
c) A minimum score of 180 in HSK Test (Level 4) and intermediate level in HSKK Test

4. Scholarship for One-Semester Study Students (5 Months) 
Applicants should have no prior experience of studying in China
4.1
a) Application is open to Confucius Institute (Classroom) students, overseas Chinese language teachers, and Chinese language related major students 
b) A minimum score of 210 in HSK Test (Level 3) and a HSKK Test Score Report 
4.2
a) For persons who wish to promote Chinese culture and have related professional background
b) Courses in Chinese Medicine and Taiji
c) A HSK Test Score Report
4.3 
a) Courses in Chinese literature, history and philosophy for students and scholars of Chinese promotion 
b) A minimum score of 210 in HSK Test (Level 3) and a internediate level HSKK Test

5. Scholarship for Four Week Study Students (July or December)
A HSK Test Score Report required and no prior experience of studying in China.

After you submit your online-applications, Confucius Institute will act as a recommending institution. Confucius Institute will examine the qualification and application materials of applicants and submit the list of recommended applicants to Hanban. Host institutes in China will review the applications and submit the proposed list of qualified candidates to Hanban. Hanban will publish list of successfull applicants on the Scholarship website. Confucius China Studies Program Ph.D. Fellowships are currently the most valuable fellowship programs that are available to international students in China. The majority of financial support is provided via the support of specific research and other projects on designated academic areas of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Headquarters will provide each approved awardee with research funds, tutoring fees for the foreign and Chinese tutors, tuition, lodging and living expenses, round-trip international transportation, etc.

Application for the Confucius China Studies Fellowships 2017-2018 will close on 15 February 2017.

Renmin University of China (RUC) is a comprehensive research oriented university with its strength in social sciences and humanity. International Summer School of renmin University (ISS) will continue to open from 8 July to 3 August following our past nine years’ successful experience since the summer of 2009. ISS provides opportunities for young scholars worldwide to work together for new experience, knowledge and insights. The summer school offers courses in Chinese language and other subjects. Most of the courses are taught in English.

The International Summer School in Beijing provides series courses on Chinese studies, general and frontier disciplines, and Chinese training courses for overseas students.

The online application period is 3 March to 25 May 2018.

  • March 1:  CI publishes information on RUC ISS
  • March 20: All CI students and language centers submit application to CI by emailing “2018 ISS application list and Hanban scholarship application” (links to application forms below) to Mariliina (mariliina.rasanen(at)helsinki.fi). 
  • March 23: CI submits final application list to RUC;Only after the final application list is submitted and confirmed can students start to do online registration. So the earlier, the better.)
  • March 26: RUC applies to Hanban for CI scholarships for all eligible applicants 
  • In late April:  RUC notifies admission results, after this students do online registration on RUC webiste
  • In April –May:  Students get notice of admissions, visa materials and other documents

1. Hanban Campus Scholarship Program
The Confucius Institute will assist in applications for Hanban Campus Scholarship Program just like before. The Scholarship will cover prospective students’ registration, tuition (for 2 courses and one of them must be Chinese language course), and accommodation (for double dormitory room) at Renmin University.

Applicants to apply for this Scholarship should meet the following requirements:

  • Ages: 15-30 years old(included), and it must be students who has registered in the Confucius Institute or one of the language centers at  Universities of Tampere, Jyväskylä, Oulu and Eastern Finland)
  • Non-Chinese citizen
  • Chinese Learning classes hours: more than 40 hours, or have HSK results.
  • Have never enjoyed Summer Campus scholarship before

Total number of applicants: 20

Note: The 20 applicants include CI students and students at five language centers. Eligible applicants who want to apply for this scholarship must fill out the 2018 ISS Application list and Hanban scholarship application and send it to mariliina.rasanen@helsinki.fi before March 20, 2018. In case there are more than 20 applicants Confucius Institute has the right to select the students it recommends to RUC. Students going to China for the first time have priority.

Kind reminders:
1. Application: Each language center should collect the list first and submit only one final list of all applicants, before March 20, 2018 to CI.
2. HSK:  All ISS attendees have to take informal HSK tests organized by RUC at the end of ISS.
3. Course selection: Every student can only select 2 courses, and one of them must be Chinese language course. Additional courses will be charged according to ISS tuition standards and students have to pay by themselves.
4. Accommodation:  It will be standard double rooms for all students (40-50 RMB/person/day).  If a student wants a single room (120 RMB/person/day), he/she has to pay the difference in prices between double room and single room (around RMB 70-80/person/day). 2. 2018 RUC International Summer School Scholarship
Those who are not eligible for the Hanban scholarship, RUC will waive tuition fee for 2 students of CI host university. Eligible students can apply for this tuition waiver by sending first a motivation letter to Confucius Institute at the University of Helsinki mariliina.rasanen@helsinki.fi before March 20, and should also send a recommendation letter from the Confucius Institute or the International Office of the University, to mariliina.rasanen@helsinki.fi at CI no later than March 23, 2018.

3. For other applicants:
RUC ISS welcomes all kinds of applicants. Please refer to the following fees:

Registration fee: 800 RMB
Tuition:  Tuition differs according to your online application time.RMB 10000 in March, 11000 in April, 12000 in May (for two courses)
One additional course charges another RMB 2000.

2018 Program Overview

Educators visit China program

Confucius Institute organizes 9 day long visits to China for Finnish educators and school principals. The idea is to give insight to Chinese education system by visiting local schools, universities and institutions. The trip suits especially for principals who are having or planning to have Chinese language teaching in their school or wish to find a partner school in China.  In one group there can be maximun 10 participants.

Time
The trips are usually arraged during school holidays in June or October. Next trip takes place in 13-21 October 2018.

Cost
The participants need to cover the visa and travel expenses to and from China by themselvelves. Confucius Institute Headquarters cover all the costs in China.

Host
The group is hosted by Renmin University of China, partner university of the Confucius Institute at the University of Helsinki. Renmin University drafts a program according to the wishes of the delegation and is in charge of the overall arrangement during the visit in China.

Application
The trip is annouced usually about half a year in advance and you need to register for the trip latest 3 months before the start of it. If you interested in joing the visit China program, contact the coordinator Mariliina Räsänen.

In 2017 Confucius Institute organized for the first time a visit to China for Finnish upper secondary school and vocational schools students. To honor Finland 100 years of indepenced China invited 100 Finnish students to visit China.
