About Markku Kulmala
Academy prof. Markku Kulmala: Aerosol and environmental physics, Academician, ISI Highly Cited Researcher and ERC Advanced Grant holder (×2), Leader of INAR and ACCC Flagship. (~1200 publications, WoS H-index 124). The main focus of his research team has been (for all topics published papers either in Nature or in Science): 1) formation and growth mechanisms of atmospheric aerosols, dynamics of aerosols, air ions and clusters; 2) aerosol-cloud-climate interactions: 3) relationships between the atmosphere and different types of land surfaces; 4) Climate – air quality interactions. The backbone of his research is long-term data from the SMEAR (Stations Measuring the Earth Surface Atmosphere Relations) stations both in Finland and China. The SMEAR stations have versatile continuous, long-term measurements of mass and energy fluxes between atmosphere and biosphere, aerosol properties and biosphere-atmosphere CO2/trace gas/aerosol interactions (Kulmala et al., 2001; Hari et al., 2016). His recent interest has been in solving air pollution problems in complex air quality chemistry-physics and meteorology continuum

About Anna Lintunen
I am associate professor in the Institute of Atmospheric and Earth System Research. I study the effect of climate and environmental conditions on ecosystems, and how the ecosystems, in turn, affect climate. My special expertise is on tree ecophysiology, i.e. studying tree structure and function, and how they respond to changes in the environment. I am a group leader in a research team Ecosystems and Climate Change (https://www2.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/boreal-trees) and involved in Atmosphere and Climate Competence Center (ACCC) Research Flagship (https://www.acccflagship.fi/).

About Charlotte Angove
I am currently working on a project to better understand tree resilience to drought. That means, investigating how trees are able to recover after drought. This research project aligns with my core interest to better understand how plants interact with their environment. My approach is interdisciplinary, owing to a research background that originated in aquatic research and led to tree research. My strongest research tools are stable isotopes, and I have a specialty in interpreting hydrogen isotopes. My long-term research aspiration is to better integrate terrestrial and aquatic research disciplines to help understand plant response to environmental change. I am also active at science outreach and have experience in different kinds of science communication (e.g., politics, podcasts & pitch competitions).

About Angelika Kübert
I am an Academy Research Fellow investigating the impact of climate- and land use change on greenhouse gas emissions of boreal ecosystems. My major research interest focuses on how ecosystems adapt and feedback to global change (such as climate change, eutrophication, and land use change) from the leaf to the ecosystem scale. I am in particular interested in the role of plants in the water- and carbon cycling of ecosystems, using amongst others flux monitoring and stable isotope techniques to unravel underlying mechanisms.

About Allan De Souza
As a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki, my primary focus is on the BioDT and eLTER projects, where I am contributing in data-related issues. My work involves collaborating with project teams to develop strategies for data formats, standards, and storage options, ensuring that all project data is findable, reliable, accessible, and usable. My specific area of responsibility involves the integration, curation, and standardization of long-term forestry data collected from the Hyytiälä monitoring station. I work closely with other researchers and project leaders to ensure that the data is properly standardized and prepared for easy and fast loading and integration to data analysis.

About Eliot Jager
I'm a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki working on the ICEMAP project (Combining Coupled Modelling and Machine Learning to Constrain Antarctica's Uncertain Future), led by Petteri Uotila and John Moore in collaboration with Rupert Gladstone and Thomas Zwinger. My research focuses on understanding how the Antarctic Ice Sheet is losing mass by studying the interactions between ice, bedrock, and ocean. Specifically, I investigate how friction controls ice sliding over bedrock, how ocean melting influences ice dynamics, and how both processes explain observed changes in Antarctica's mass loss, velocity, and surface elevation over recent decades. This work addresses a critical question: how likely are high-end sea-level rise scenarios that could be globally catastrophic? Watching Alpine glaciers melt during childhood hikes in France sparked my commitment to ice sheet modeling. After completing my PhD at the University of Grenoble Alps—where I developed methods to validate ice sheet models against satellite observations—I moved to Finland in 2024 to broaden my expertise to Antarctica. Beyond research, I teach Glaciology and Fluid Phenomena courses at the University of Helsinki, sharing my passion for understanding Earth's frozen regions with students. I'm also a Climate Fresk trainer, facilitating workshops that help people understand climate change through interactive learning. I believe scientists have a responsibility not just to produce knowledge, but to ensure it reaches the people who need it—from policymakers planning coastal adaptation to communities facing rising seas.
