Guided tours of the Observatory for formal education groups

We offer activities to daycare centres and pre-primary, primary, secondary and upper secondary schools.
For school groups

Make your astronomy teaching come alive with a visit to the Observatory!

Completed in 1834 on Tähtitorninvuori hill, the Observatory now serves as the Helsinki University Museum Flame’s visitor centre for astronomy. The Observatory offers exclusive access to formal education groups on specific days of the week.

On your journey across the universe, you will learn about our own solar system and its phenomena, the life of the stars, the structure and scale of our universe, and astronomical observations on various wavelengths of light. Pupils can pretend to be planets in a planetary system around a star and touch a real meteorite. We will also take a peek into the history of the Observatory building with its antique instruments, and climb through the attic to the historical observation towers. In the planetarium, we examine and discuss the stars in the northern sky around us, and explore the movement of the stars in the night sky.

Bookings available in term time:

  • Tue–Wed: 9:00–10:15, 10:30–11:45, 12:15–13:30 or 13:45–15:00
  • Thu–Fri: 9:00–10:15 or 10:30–11:45

The price of a visit for a school class (max. 30 pupils) on the dates and times set out above is EUR 60, including admission and a guided tour. If the class is large, it will be split into two groups, one of which will begin their visit in the unheated facilities (during the cold season, they should not take off their outerwear).

Arrival: Kopernikuksentie 1, trams 10 and 2

For daycare groups

A space adventure at the Observatory!

The Observatory tour can be tailored to provide a fascinating and educational experience to visitors of all ages, including children in daycare and pre-primary education.

On your journey across the universe, you will learn about the heavenly bodies in our own solar system and about the observed phenomena resulting from their movements. And what kind of stars are there and what do we know about them? What is our universe made of? How big is it? You can pretend to be planets in a planetary system around a star and touch a real meteorite, for instance. We will also take a peek at the history of the Observatory building: what was it like for the astronomy professor to live there? We will climb through the attic to the historical observation towers. In the planetarium, we will look up at the stars in our northern sky to seek the most familiar constellations together with the guide, and wonder at objects and phenomena.

Bookings available in term time:

  • Tue–Wed: 9:00–10:15, 10:30–11:45, 12:15–13:30 or 13:45–15:00
  • Thu–Fri: 9:00–10:15 or 10:30–11:45

The price of a visit for a group (max. 30 children) on the dates and times set out above is EUR 60, including admission and a guided tour. If the group is large, it will be split into two smaller groups, one of which will begin their visit in the unheated facilities (during the cold season, they should not take off their outerwear). We recommend the guided tour for children from four years of age.

A virtual tour of the Observatory

You are now welcome to visit the Observatory virtually – from anywhere on Earth!

Accompanied by a live guide, you will learn about our own solar system and its phenomena, the life of the stars, the structure and scale of our universe, and astronomical observations on various wavelengths of light. We will also take a peek into the history of the Observatory building with its antique instruments, and acquaint ourselves with the historical observation towers in the attic. A planetarium show gives us the chance to examine the stars in the northern sky and learn about the movement of the stars in the night sky and about the location of the most familiar constellations.

Bookings available in term time:

  • Tue–Wed: 9:00–10:15, 10:30–11:45, 12:15–13:30 tai 13:45–15:00
  • Thu–Fri: 9:00–10:15 tai 10:30–11:45

The price of a virtual guided tour is EUR 60 per pupil group (max. 30 pupils). Duration: about 75 minutes.

As the virtual tour is interactive, you can ask the guide questions. Ideally, the virtual tour should be followed by the whole class together, but if pupils are attending remote instruction, they can join the tour from their own computers. You need not download any software.

If you have problems joining the virtual guided tour, call us at +358 2 941 24244 (the Observatory info number).
