The University of Helsinki grants the annual Open Science Award in recognition of the significant promotion of open science. The theme of the Award this year is the reuse of research data.
The re-use of research material and data is a question of sustainability and responsibility: it is not possible or worthwhile to collect new material for all research. This may be for reasons such as research ethics or minimising the ecological footprint of the research. Good and responsible science can be done by using data created by others.
Submit a proposal for the Open Science Award
The goal of the Open Science Award is to highlight the reuse of previously created data in research. This year the Award is granted for a project, research project, researcher or research group that has used research data, pre-created material in an insightful way. In practice, this can mean:
- Insightful new use of data from a data repository
- a new kind of utilisation of the data originally generated for non-research purposes
- a multidisciplinary approach to the re-use of data,
- research that has combined data from different sources, and the data have been used to gain a broader overall view or to develop new methods.
Any member of the university community may submit a proposal:
The winner will be announced during The National Open Science and Research Winter Conference on 3 December, 2025.
