Customer service

• Kumpula, Meilahti and Viikki Campus Libraries: 1–14 June, Mon–Fri 10:00–16:00.
  • Tue 2 June: Customer service desks at Kumpula, Meilahti and Viikki campus libraries will be closed due to a staff event.

Library facilities

• Kaisa House, Learning Centre Aleksandria, and Viikki Campus Library are open on weekdays throughout the summer. The exception is Midsummer (June 19–21), when we will be closed.
  • With an access tag you can access Aleksandria every day 7:00-1:00.
• Kumpula and Meilahti Campus Libraries are open 1–14 June, Mon–Fri 8:00–16:00, and closed 15 June–2 August.

Electronic resources of the library can be used by the students, teachers, researchers and staff of the University of Helsinki, students of the Open University of the University of Helsinki and all customers visiting the library premises.

Accessing the electronic resources from outside the library locations via a remote connection requires a University user account.  

If you are an external customer, you can access the electronic resources at the library premises either by using the library terminals or on your own laptop via a HelsinkiUni guest network. The password to the guest network is uniguest.

Kumpula, Meilahti, and Viikki campus libraries have long loan periods during the summer.

Loans from the campus libraries collections will receive a due date on 12 August as follows:

• 28 day loans starting on 18 May
• 14 day loans (textbooks) starting on 1 June
• 2 day loans starting on 11 June

The material from the Kaisa House collections has normal loan periods, as the library and its customer service is open all summer.

You can order books from the Kumpula and Meilahti collections to be picked up from the Kaisa House or Viikki by making a reservation for the book in .

As a rule students can’t get reference material from Meilahti or Kumpula. However, in case of an urgent need e.g. having to do with graduation it is possible to get material before August by contacting the library (, tel. ). All cases are assessed individually.

You can return books to the Main Library and Viikki Campus Library during the opening hours. 

Books can be returned to the return hatches around the clock at Kaisa House and Kumpula. In Meilahti, books can be returned to the Haartman Institute's return box during the building's opening hours.

• Note that the return boxes in Kumpula and Meilahti are emptied twice a week. Your loans may not necessarily appear as returned immediately and fines will be collected if the loans are overdue.
• On the Kumpula Campus the overnight return box is located at Physicum’s main entrance (Gustaf Hällströmin katu 2a), next to the gray side door.
• In Meilahti the return box is located in the lobby of the Haartman Institute (Haartmaninkatu 3), next to the university mailbox and near the lobby service desk. The building is open Mon-Fri 8-15:00.
• The Kaisa House overnight return machine is located on the left side of the main entrance (Fabianinkatu 30).

You can order books from the Kumpula and Meilahti collections to be picked up from the Kaisa House or Viikki by making a reservation for the book in .

As of Friday 5 June, it is no longer possible to choose Kumpula or Meilahti as the pick-up location for your reservation. However, it is possible to pick up arrived reservations at the Kumpula and Meilahti campus libraries until Friday 12 June. From Monday 15 June onwards, all reservations will be picked up at Kaisa House or Viikki.

You can check the pick-up location on the arrival notification sent to your email.

Staff of the University of Helsinki and the Helsinki University Hospital can request books (excluding textbooks) and articles in periodicals to be delivered to their desk.

• The service is available all summer. It is also possible to order from libraries that are closed.
• To qualify for this service, the user’s customer information in Helka must include a University email address and the user must be indicated as belonging to the University staff.
• When making a request in Helka and selecting the pick up location, scroll down to the bottom of the drop-down menu, and select the lowest point Work Address.

The interlibrary loan service is available all summer. Interlibrary loans will be available for pick-up in the Main Library Kaisa House.
