HCAS Winter School 2025: Getting Your Research Out There: Contemporary Approaches to Academic Writing, Publishing, and Outreach

The Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies (HCAS) welcomes doctoral candidates of the University of Helsinki to the HCAS Winter School on Humanities and Social Sciences, to be held over three days from February 26 to February 28, 2025.

Registration on Sisu opens on January 10 and closes on January 31, 2025 (at midnight). The participants accepted on the course will be asked to submit a pre-assignment by February 12, 2025 (more instructions below).

The HCAS Winter School 2025 will delve into the topic of research dissemination, examining it broadly from writing academic publications to reaching audiences both within and outside of academia. Special attention will be given to recent societal and technological developments that are transforming the conditions of academic work, such as the growing presence of artificial intelligence, the rise of digital publication platforms and open-access venues, as well as the increasing expectations for researchers to communicate the significance of their work to diverse academic and non-academic audiences. These topics will be explored at the Winter School with a particular focus on how early-career researchers can develop effective strategies to enhance their prospects of building an academic career.

Our discussions will focus on themes such as:

  • Research Impact: Understanding impact in its various forms and exploring how scholars can convey the significance of their research to diverse audiences.
  • Academic Writing: Understanding the role and forms of writing in the context of different disciplines, developing effective strategies for academic writing, finding the right form and publication venue for your work and navigating the processes of publishing.
  • New Directions in Publishing: Learning about open science (open access publications and open data) and new or non-conventional modes of publishing such as multimodal publishing and collaborations between the arts and sciences.
  • Artificial Intelligence: Investigating the impact of generative artificial intelligence on academic writing and publishing.
  • Outreach: Learning how to present your research to multidisciplinary academic audiences and non-academic audiences.

HCAS Winter Schools are organized annually and give doctoral candidates a chance to learn essential skills and practices related to academic research and career building and to discuss their work with more experienced researchers in an interdisciplinary and international setting. The Winter School lasts three days and takes place in the Collegium building at Fabianinkatu 24 A, 3rd floor.

The Winter School is organized and taught by Collegium fellows. The fellows are experts in different fields of the humanities and social sciences, including law, behavioral sciences, and theology. The participants of the HCAS Winter School should be affiliated with the University of Helsinki, and their doctoral work should focus on fields represented at the Collegium.

HCAS is an independent institute for advanced study within the University of Helsinki. We promote high-quality research in the humanities and social sciences, foster dialogue between different academic orientations, encourage the integration of approaches from different disciplines, and support international academic collaboration.

The Winter School consists of plenaries and workshops, in which participants are divided into small groups. In the thematic plenaries, current Collegium Fellows and experts from outside the Collegium share their knowledge of different facets of academic career-building. The workshops offer doctoral candidates the opportunity to receive personal feedback from HCAS Fellows and other doctoral candidates in a relaxed environment. The Winter School sessions begin at 9:15 am or later and end by 4:30 pm; in addition, the Collegium hosts a social event in the evening.

The Winter School yields 3 ECTS. The registration of the credits will be administered by the doctoral school. The language of the Winter School is English. A detailed program will be sent to the registered participants before the Winter School.

Registration

Doctoral candidates wishing to participate in the Winter School are requested to register on Sisu by January 31, 2025. The maximum number of participants at the Winter School is 40. If there are more registrations than there are places on the course, the students are selected on the basis of a draw. Upon registration, participants are asked to answer a few questions about their PhD studies.

Pre-assignment

All participants should prepare to submit their written pre-assignment by February 12, 2025. This text will serve as a basis for assignments and discussions in small groups during the Winter School.

Instructions

  1. Write a summary of a research project (e.g. your dissertation or an article) that highlights the contribution of your project in relation to existing research and articulates why your project matters. (Max. 500 words)
  2. Prepare to introduce your research orally to your group members (max. 3 minutes): What are your research interests and why do they matter?

Please read the paragraphs submitted by the other members of your small group before the beginning of the winter school (you will get access to them on Moodle).

Registered course participants will receive an email with instructions on submitting the pre-assignment and accessing the submissions of their group members.
