Organised by Marja Peltola and Ann Phoenix
The research for Nuancing Young Masculinities (Helsinki University Press, 2022) illuminated the importance of recognising that masculinities are never fixed, but always changing. It underlined the importance of taking a relational view of masculinities and recognising the particularity of both place and time for the ways in which boys negotiate and construct their masculinities. The publication of Nuancing Young Masculinities provides an opportunity to take a fresh look at the ways in which Finnish young masculinities are in process and the possible ways in which they share common features with masculinities in other countries. It considers ways in which boys are not only gendered but are from different socioeconomic and racialised backgrounds and situated in different contexts as emotional, vulnerable and agentic.
The Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies invites you to a discussion of these issues that draws on a variety of scholars’ expertise on contemporary young masculinities. It is a particularly fitting host since the research for Nuancing Young Masculinities was conducted at the Collegium.
