Professor David Schlosberg has been appointed theme lead of one of the four NNF–IAS Fellow Theme groups at HCAS for the period 2027–2032. The NNF-IAS fellow groups will work across disciplines to transform and bring novel perspectives to the topics of health and sustainability, and they will collaborate with other fellows at Nordic Institutes for Advanced Studies in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden.
Starting in 2029 and lasting until 2031, the third sub-topic in the programme is “Sustainability: Consumption and Green Transitions”. It will be led by Prof. Schlosberg and coordinated by the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, which offers scholars a state-of-the-art research environment that is attractive and international for conducting research in the humanities and social sciences.

David Schlosberg is an environmental political theorist best known for developing a foundational framework for understanding environmental justice that encompasses equity, recognition, participation, and capabilities – work that has been widely cited and used globally by governments, NGOs, and think tanks. His applied work, with a range of government and civil society partners, includes justice in adaptation and resilience planning and community-based responses to climate disasters. His books include Defining Environmental Justice (Oxford, 2007), Sustainable Materialism: Environmental Movements and the Politics of Everyday Life (Oxford 2019), and Institutionalising Multispecies Justice (Cambridge 2025).
