Apply for the HCAS-RJ Fellowship

The Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies (HCAS) invites applications for one HCAS-RJ Fellow to be hired for a fixed term from August 15 2025 to August 14 2026.

The fellowship is intended for mid-career researchers in the fields of the humanities and social sciences with an affiliation with a university in Sweden.

The purpose of this Nordic Fellowship Programme is to facilitate academic exchange between Sweden and Finland and to give the selected fellows an opportunity to pursue their research interests in the multidisciplinary environment of HCAS. The working language of HCAS is English, and the Collegium expects the fellows to be present for at least 80 % of their working time. The program ismade possible by funding from Riksbankens Jubileumsfond.

Who can apply

The HCAS-RJ Fellowship is intended for mid-career researchers representing any discipline in the humanities and social science, including law, theology, and behavioral sciences. Mid-career researcher refers to persons who have received their PhD degree more than five years ago and do not yet have a full professorship. In addition, applicants should have an affiliation with a university in Sweden. The job title of the position is University Researcher.

Besides having a doctoral degree in the humanities or social sciences, successful candidates should have the ability to produce internationally recognized high-quality research in their field. Their research topic should also show potential for interdisciplinary collaboration. 

The Director of HCAS makes the decision on the fellowship based on the applicants’ academic merits and the suitability of their research topic for HCAS. 

What we offer

HCAS provides a creative and inspiring research environment, which allows the fellows to pursue their personal research projects. All fellows have an office on HCAS premises, located at the heart of the University of Helsinki on the City Centre Campus, with easy access to libraries and other university services. The HCAS-RJ Fellowship is a salaried position. The salary will be based on levels 6–7 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will receive a salary component based on personal work performance. The annual gross salary is 60 000 – 73 000 €. Moreover, the RJ Fellow is entitled to a housing benefit arranged by the HCAS as well as a personal allowance up to 4 000 € for research and travel costs.
