Professor Peter Hästö develops maths teaching

Peter Hästö draws inspiration from fundamental mathematical research to enrich mathematics education. He has also recently been elected as a member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences in Finland.

What are your research topics?

Mathematical analysis, more specifically function spaces and partial differential equations, as well as mathematics education, especially mathematical flexibility.

Where and how does the topic of your research have an impact?

Analysis falls under basic research, which currently informs the work and thinking of other mathematics researchers. The educational research has influenced, among other things, the large national teacher continued professional development program Joustavaan matematiikkaan.

What is inspiring in your field right now?

Understanding and solving mathematical problems. Occasionally also non-mathematical problems.

Peter Hästö is the Professor of Mathematics at the Faculty of Science (Swedish-language professorship).

The inaugural lectures of the new professors
