The ceremony, marking the 100th Conferment Ceremony of the Faculty of Philosophy and recognised as a national cultural heritage, celebrates academic achievements and the sense of belonging to the academic community.
Professor Alan Lyles, a distinguished figure in the field of pharmaceutical sciences, holds the position of Professor of Government, Business, and Nonprofit Partnerships in the University of Baltimore's School of Public and International Affairs and the School of Health and Human Services. His collaboration with the University of Helsinki dates back to 2005, and he has been serving as a Docent at the University since 2007, specialising in pharmacoeconomics and health policy.
Throughout the years, Professor Lyles has played a pivotal role in researching and providing expert advice on Finland's healthcare and social service systems. His focus on evidence-informed policy, practice, and competence development has greatly contributed to the advancement of Finland's healthcare landscape.
The University of Helsinki's decision to confer an honorary doctorate upon Professor Lyles underscores his exceptional contributions to the field. The honorary doctorate, known as the University's highest recognition, is a testament to his outstanding achievements and influence in the realm of pharmaceutical sciences.
Professor Lyles' collaboration with the University of Helsinki has been made possible through the support of the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Exchanges' Fulbright Specialist program. This program has facilitated several extended visits, enabling Professor Lyles to engage in strategic projects and initiatives with the University.
Notable achievements include the establishment of the first professorship in pharmacoeconomics in Finland, sponsored by the University Pharmacy (Yliopiston Apteekki) in 2005, the development of a specialization program in hospital and community pharmacy practice (clinical pharmacy), and the implementation of a research, development, and innovation ecosystem in the wellbeing county Keusote as part of Finland's ongoing social and health services reform.
