Within its disciplines, the faculty carries out basic research on a top level internationally. Besides pure mathematics and the profoundest fundamental scientific questions, a large part of the research is focused according to the faculty’s key areas on solving the big global challenges. The skills on four research focus areas The Atmosphere and Climate Change, Materials and Natural Resources, Mathematical Analysis - Algorithms - Software and Systems evolving in time from the Big bang to modern society are exploited within society, via collaboration with the governmental and other research institutions as well as with enterprises of different sizes. Open science brings also a new kind of collaboration partners and networks.

One of the basic prerequisites for scientific research, and a measure of its quality, is external funding, and the research groups of the faculty have been very successful in the most competitive research funding in science. (Centres of Excellence of Academy of Finland, Academy professorships, ERC funding etc).
