The Faculty of Medicine will accept maximum 10 applicants for theoretical courses arranged in English.
During the study year 2016-2017 there are no possibilities to make clinical electives or internships in English, Finnish or Swedish, etc. because of the extensive change in Licentiate in medicine and in dentistry degree study curriculums. During the same time we have undergone a recent reduction in personnel resources.
Consequently, there will not be available a clinical curriculum of 60 ECTS exclusively in English. However, it’s possible to assemble 60 ECTS within one year when studies are complemented with other theoretical courses and research work.
Clinicum (clinical medicine departments) in the Faculty of Medicine arranges theoretical courses designed for Finnish medical students but available partly (study groups, part of the lectures and extra material in English) for exchange or visiting students. Taking part in the clinical work during theoretical courses is mostly not allowed for exchange and visiting students. Instead of clinical work, there will be complementary group tasks. Learning assessment is evaluated by a written exam.
Medical courses (arranged by Clinicum) require preclinical studies (2 years) as well as a basic knowledge of pathology, virology, serology and bacteriology.
Because it’s possible that you have still some teaching sessions at HUS (Hospital district of Helsinki and Uusimaa) hospitals, the full vaccination program must be accomplished according to the HUS guidelines.
Research work on some of the research groups at Faculty of Medicine, or making student’s own thesis under the guidance of some of our teachers or professors, is possible. The ECTS points for Research Project is counted as follows: 1 week of full time work is 1,5 ECTS points; 2 weeks = 3 points, etc.)
Medical courses, preliminary schedule 2017-2018
Course desciptions for medical courses 2017-2018 will be published during the spring.
Working on your Learning Agreement?
Please add the course you would like to participate (arranged by Clinicum, Transmed, Doctoral school, etc. or research). ECTS points are rewarded only for students who successfully pass the whole course (every class and final exam are obligatory).
If you have already filled your learning agreement before reading this new information, we will give time to change your learning agreement.
Medical courses in Finnish or Swedish
Sometimes exchange or visiting medical students which have been studying at least 3 years can be admitted to the courses in Finnish or in Swedish but only if there is a vacant place available after the University of Helsinki medical students have been admitted. This requires case specific negotiation and we cannot promise beforehand if a certain course is available.
As soon as you have been nominated by your home university, contact us meilahti-student (at) helsinki.fi and tell us which of the courses in Finnish/Swedish you are interest in. Then we can investigate the possibilities to take part in these courses.
Note: You can’t have clinical electives or internship during the study year 2016-2017.
