Degree Programmes

At the University of Helsinki, education is organised into degree programmes. The Faculty offers three degree programmes: a three-year Bachelor’s Programme in Law, a two-year Master’s Programme in Law and a two-year Master’s Programme in Global Governance Law. Degree Programmes
  • Bachelor's Programme (in Finnish): Teaching in the Bachelor’s Programme in Law is largely based on lectures and case studies covering all key fields of law. In practice, all graduates from the Bachelor’s Programme in Law continue their studies in the Master’s Programme in Law.
  • Master's Programme (in Finnish): The Master’s Programme in Law focuses on the development of research skills and offers a wide range of optional studies that ensure students can deepen their knowledge.
  • English taught Master’s Programme in Global Governance Law (GGL): The Master’s Programme in Global Governance Law admits some 30 students each year. Programme focuses on the challenges posed by increasingly global lawmaking.

In the Faculty of Law you can complete following degrees in Finnish or Swedish: Bachelor of Laws (oikeusnotaari, ON) and Master of Laws (oikeustieteen maisteri, OTM). You have also the possibility to complete a bilingual (Finnish-Swedish) bachelor´s degree. It is possible to complete these degrees in Helsinki or Vaasa.

In Helsinki, you can also complete the Master of International and Comparative Law degree (kansainvälisen ja vertailevan oikeustieteen maisteri, MICL).

With Bachelor of Laws degree you are qualified to apply for positions which require first-cycle degree. Master of Laws degree and Master of International and Comparative Law (MICL) degree qualify you to apply for positions which require second-cycle degree. Finnish taught Master of Laws degree qualifies you also for positions which require specifically a Finnish Master of Laws degree.

After your master's degree, you can complete a postgraduate degree by applying for doctoral studies.

How to apply

Annually admits some 250 new students, or 5–10 % of those who apply. Swedish-speaking students have a separate admission quota.
