Italian philology

In Italian philology, both philological and purely linguistic research is conducted. The former field is represented by the numerous text editions that Helsinki-based scholars of Romance languages have been publishing since the late 19th century. The latter includes, for example, several contrastive (Finnish-Italian) studies and research concerning historical syntax.

The variety of research topics is great: research in sociolinguistics and the language of media, for instance, provides diverse research objectives for those interested in contemporary Italian. Literature, on the other hand, presents opportunities to focus on the study of works by individual contemporary authors. The discipline also has strong traditions in studying the Italian language and literature of earlier centuries.
