North American studies

North American studies is the multimethodological study of culture(s) in the United States (American studies) and Canada (Canadian studies). The discipline is based on the traditions of both area and cultural studies.

The discipline examines cultural, social and societal phenomena in North America from a multidisciplinary perspective. North American studies provides knowledge and tools for the profound understanding of American and Canadian culture, history, politics, literature and geography. The discipline’s biennial Maple Leaf and Eagle conference offers a broad international review of the current status of North American studies.
