Dental medicine: top-ranked again

Dental Medicine at the University of Helsinki is the number 1 in the Nordic countries, 2nd in the EU and has achieved an outstanding 18th position worldwide in the prestigious subject-specific Shanghai Ranking 2025.

Notably, the department has achieved its highest ranking yet in Shanghai Ranking. This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication to excellence. It´s a significant milestone for a team of fewer than 30 staff members.

Head of Department of Oral and Maxillofacial diseases, Professor David Rice expressed pride in this accomplishment, stating,
"We are a very small department, but we have been able to compete with the global heavyweights. This is not a one-year success either, we have been in the world’s top 50 for 9 out of the last 10 years, this year’s rank is our highest yet. This is something that should be celebrated."

Professor Rice highlighted several key factors contributing to this success in internationally recognized subject-specific rankings. These include the volume of research papers published in top scientific journals and international recognition through esteemed roles such as Editor-in-Chief of leading journals and various international awards.

Looking ahead, the department is focused on several key research areas within dental medicine. These include exploring the relationship between oral health and systemic health from precision diagnostics to patient care, developmental genetics of craniofacial deformities, cancer biology and treatment efficacy, and advancements in dental pedagogy.

This achievement not only underscores the department's commitment to excellence but also reflects its ongoing contributions to the field of dental medicine.  The wide-ranging and diverse research activities of the Department include both clinical and basic research.
