Associate professor/Professor position open

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of a part-time (35 %) Associate professor/professor. The field of the position is Translational Medicine. The position may be filled as associate professor or professor, depending on the candidates’ merits and career stage.

The professorship in Translational Medicine is connected to the position of the Director of the Wihuri Research Institute. The professorship and the position of Director of the Wihuri Research Institute are filled through a simultaneous open application process. To be considered for the position of associate professor / professor, the applicant must apply for both positions. A separate application must be submitted for the position of Director of the Wihuri Research Institute in accordance with Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation´s application guidelines.

Associate professor

An appointee to the position of associate professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for associate professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline. When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience.

Professor

An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline.

When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills.

To ensure that the applicant’s ability to supervise theses and dissertations meets the requirements of the Faculty of Medicine, he or she must have completed the supervision of at least one doctoral dissertation. The requirement for a supervised dissertation must be met by the end of the application deadline.

The duties of the associate professor / professor include carrying out and supervising cutting-edge international scientific research and, consequently, following scientific developments and participating in public engagement and in Finnish and international cooperation in the field. Other duties include tasks assigned to the Faculty.

The associate professor / professor is responsible for under- and postgraduate education as well as continuing education in the applicable fields of Translational Medicine and participates in teaching in practical small groups and in lecture-based teaching.

The position may also involve planning, development and implementation of specialist training depending on the candidates’ background and competence.

The salary will be based on level 7 (associate professor) and levels 8-10 (professor) of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.

The professorship in Translational Medicine is connected to the position of Director at Wihuri Research Institute. A separate application must be submitted for the position of Director accordance with Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation´s instructions. Should the proposals of the appointment committees of the Faculty of Medicine and Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation differ from each other, Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation may continue the appointment procedure for the position of Director. In this case The Faculty of Medicine will terminate the appointment process for the professorship. Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation may terminate, if necessary, the ongoing recruitment process for the Director, in which case the appointment process for the professorship at the Faculty of Medicine expires and is no longer a joint position. If the appointee to the professorship resigns from the position of Director at Wihuri Research Institute, his or her employment contract with the University of Helsinki will also be terminated.
