AGFOREE is the Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Use of Renewable Natural Resources. It focuses on plant production, forests, domestic animals, technology, the environment and economy. Sustainable use of resources is imperative for the future of humankind, nature and planet Earth.
Many of the research fields included in AGFOREE integrate basic and applied research. We explore basic natural processes in phenomena spanning scales from the molecular to the global, and we study their socio-economic aspects and related environmental policy context.
AGFOREE trains doctoral candidates in the fields of agriculture, forestry, renewable natural resources and sustainable use of natural resources. AGFOREE covers both basic and applied research in these fields.
Subject areas covered by the programme include: biology, agriculture and forestry, environment
- cultivated plants
- domestic animals
- economy and society
Through national collaboration, the teaching personnel of the programme includes all the major agricultural and forestry groups in Finland both at universities and research institutes as well as international experts and networks. The partnership of basic and translational research is seen as an important asset of the educational programme and is made possible by the joint collaboration of the two faculties in Viikki involved in this programme (Biological & Environmental Sciences and Agriculture & Forestry).
Short intensive courses on specific subject areas and methods in ecology and evolutionary and environmental biology complement the research of the doctoral candidate carried out in internationally rich research laboratories. Courses are either practically or lecture based and are usually assessed by written assignments or oral presentation of results.
Progress of doctoral candidates is followed not only by the supervisor but by a thesis advisory committee who monitor the progress of students throughout their research and studies.
