The project and field courses in the Master’s Programme in Technologies for Sustainable Use of Renewable Resources provides opportunities for networking with professionals, gaining practical learning experience, and enhancing work-life skills during your studies.
During these courses, you will understand the real challenges faced by companies and work on topics related to circular economy, sustainability, the utilisation of technologies, and resource efficiency.
The studies in the programme include at least four weeks of intensive field studies each academic year in the programme’s collaboration area in the Satakunta region of Western Finland.
In the courses, students become acquainted with the operations and environment of the organisation. The collaborating companies operate in the renewable resources sector, including food and forest industries.

The coordination and communication of the company cooperation activities are handled by the University of Helsinki team.
Corex is one of the world's leading manufacturers of coreboard, cores and tubes and a part of the international VPK Group. In Pori board mill we produce high-quality coreboard which is used in the manufacture of cores and tubes. Cores and tubes are, in turn, used in a variety of industries, such as paper and board industry and plastics industry. Corex has three core plants in Finland, in Loviisa, Liljendal, and Imatra.
Pori coreboard mill is located on the banks of the Kokemäki river in the Aittaluoto industrial park of Pori. The mill produces mainly coreboard but also greyboard which is used, for instance, for laminating and converting boxes and magazine files. Production started in January 1992 with a coreboard machine, and its current production capacity stands at 135,000 tons. It is one of the largest coreboard machines in the world. The factory employs about 90 people.
The Pori board mill produces coreboard entirely from recycled fibers. The mill uses a wide selection of brown board raw materials from Old Corrugated Containers to mixed packaging waste and wrappings.

Finnamyl, the Finnish Potato Expert
Finnamyl processes Finnish potatoes into starch and starch potato products for both food and industrial use. The company is part of the Chemigate Group, which in turn belongs to the Berner Group. Berner is responsible for marketing the starch products to consumers and the food industry. Finnamyl's products combine quality, responsibility and Finnish origin, From Finnish fields.
Potato Starch, a Versatile Kitchen Classic
Potato starch, also known as potato flour, is wonderfully versatile in the kitchen. It works its magic in casseroles, soups, sauces, kissels and puddings, not to mention light and fluffy cakes.
Potato Protein, the Pick of Plant Proteins
Potato protein has one of the best amino acid compositions among plant proteins, making it an excellent choice for balancing the amino acid profile of a wide range of products. Although a potato contains only about 1% protein, it is well worth collecting thanks to its outstanding quality.
Side Streams Put to Good Use
The potato starch production process also yields a fibre fraction known as potato pulp, which is used as cattle feed. From the potato protein process comes Viljelijän NPKS, an organically certified liquid fertiliser that returns nutrients back to Finnish fields.

Länsi-Kalkkuna is jointly owned by meat product producers Atria Finland Ltd and HKFoods. Länsi-Kalkkuna’s mission is to produce Finnish turkey meat for its owners. Länsi-Kalkkuna is responsible for the whole production chain of turkey meat in Finland: parent stock poults and egg layers, hatchery, rearing facilities, slaughterhouse and cutting plant.
From the cutting plant, the prepared meat is transported to Atria and HKFoods who then process and market the meat both as fresh meat products and cold cuts.
Most of Länsi-Kalkkuna subcontractor farms are in the regions of Satakunta, Southwest Finland, Southern Ostrobothnia and Ostrobothnia. A few are in the Southern Savonia.
Länsi-Kalkkuna’s turkey hatchery is located in Jalasjärvi, Kurikka in Southern Ostrobothnia. Länsi-Kalkkuna’s slaughterhouse and cutting plant are in the Satakunta region, in Säkylä.
The majority of Finnish turkeys (99 %) are raised as poultry contract farming for Länsi-Kalkkuna. This means the subcontractor works with the hatchery and slaughterhouse throughout the growing period of the birds and in all matters related to them.
