We believe that multidisciplinary and holistic approach are the key to solve the challenges faced by our planet. Our study tracks offer solid basis in Aerosol Physics and Atmospheric Chemistry, Biosphere-Atmosphere Cycles, Climate and Sustainability, Meteorology, and Physics of the Hydrosphere. You can learn and apply state-of-the-art methods of research, from lab experiments and observations (in-situ and remote sensing) to modelling and data science/machine learning.
We consider phenomena and processes across the scales: from nanoparticles to weather systems, from long-term trends to extreme events, and all over the planet: from Arctic tundra and boreal forest to Southern Ocean and megacities. During your studies, you will gain climate expertise to shape future career in academia, industry, or elsewhere.

Observations are an essential part of atmospheric sciences, and this is reflected in our Master programme. During intensive study periods in autumn and spring, we provide intensive courses focused on field measurements or data analyses:
The courses are often held at the research station SMEAR II located in the boreal forest near village Hyytiälä in Southern Finland. SMEAR II run by INAR is our flagship station, where hundreds of variables have been measured in the atmosphere, soil, water and vegetation every second during more than 25 years. More stations and measurement sites can be found all over Finland, including SMEAR-Agri and SMEAR III close to the Master programme study sites, Viikki and Kumpula campuses.
The international students in the Master's Programme in Meteorology, Atmospheric and Climate-System Sciences can apply to the UNITalent Programme. It is designed to support international students in building professional networks in Finland and to gain insight into field specific working life. Students take part by attending monthly group meetings with hosting organisation for a period of three months. During the programme, the University Career Services also provides training in career management skills. The continuation of the programme will be decided in spring 2026.
