Introduction: Unveiling a New Chapter
Greetings from a student's perspective beyond European borders! My journey into the realm of human nutrition and food-related behavior began in Iran, where I completed my bachelor's degree in nutrition sciences seven years ago. Initially, my post-graduation path led me to work as a nutritionist and dietitian in hospitals and clinics. Later, I took on the role of a supervisor in restaurant food services. However, my thirst for knowledge persisted, prompting me to explore further education.
Discovering the Unconventional: University of Helsinki's Programme
After an extensive search for global opportunities, the University of Helsinki's Master's Programme in Human Nutrition and Food-Related Behavior caught my attention. It presented a fresh perspective, not limited to understanding nutrition's physiological aspects but delving into the psychosocial and cultural dimensions of food choices. The programme's focus on recognizing the diversity of food and nutritional issues resonated with my aspirations.
A Multifaceted Approach to Learning
What sets this program apart is its diverse teaching methods, a contrast to my previous university experience. In Helsinki, our education involves contact teaching, lectures, group work, oral presentations, written reports, and independent study. This holistic approach enhances skills such as communication and presentation, ensuring a well-rounded education.
Exploring Future Avenues: Beyond the Classroom
One of the programme's strengths lies in its potential for diverse career paths. Whether aspiring to be a researcher, joining food companies, or contributing to food services, the possibilities are vast. Engaging with alumni who have pursued different jobs broadened my perspective on the opportunities awaiting a graduate from this programme.
Evaluation without Exams: Embracing a New Learning Paradigm
A refreshing departure from traditional exams, the program emphasizes learning diaries and assignments. This approach fosters a deeper understanding, encouraging us to apply knowledge rather than memorize for tests—an approach I find more enriching and conducive to genuine learning.
Thriving in Helsinki's Student Life: A collection of diverse experiences
As an international student, integrating into Finnish society has been a delightful journey. The University of Helsinki offers a vibrant student life with opportunities to join various organizations. I am part of our program's organization, Oikos, providing a space to share experiences, discuss courses, and, most importantly, build long-lasting friendships with fellow students.
A Harmonious Academic Environment: Where teachers are supportive partners.
What truly sets the University of Helsinki apart is the friendly and close-knit atmosphere between teachers and students. The accessibility of professors and their unwavering support create an environment where I feel heard and understood, fostering an optimal learning experience.
