Why did you want to study in the master’s programme in Genetics and Molecular Biology?
Hassan: Finland is a top education country, so it was on my priority list while I looked for a master’s programme after my basic studies in Lebanon. I was in search of a programme that combines theoretical courses with practical aspects and lab experience, as I wanted to grow as a scientist.
Elli: I became interested in molecular biology and the connections between human genetics and diseases during my biology bachelor’s studies at the University of Helsinki. During the studies, we were introduced to master's programmes, and this one seemed just right for me.
How are the studies in practice?
Elli: We have had a diverse range of courses: some in lecture halls on the core aspects of molecular biology and some in the laboratory. It has also been possible to choose courses in medical, mathematical and natural sciences from other faculties.
Hassan: The studies encompass a balanced distribution of theoretical and practical courses that provide students with necessary skills. I’ll give you two examples. Elements of Bioinformatics began with the basics of coding, which were new to most of the students. During the course we learned core computational methods of our field, a much-needed skill in contemporary science. In the practical course Methods of Cell Biology we learned to image cells, stain specific proteins of interest, and practise proper work etiquette in cell culture. Working in a sterile environment was a new experience for me.
What about the master’s thesis? What support is offered for writing it?
Hassan: Aside from a nice master’s symposium and seminar course, which teach the basics on how to write a thesis, we have an academic writing course where you give and receive feedback all the time. The supervisors are very involved. The whole programme supported me in the writing process.
Elli: My group leader has been a really strong support for me, and I have also discussed things a lot with, and received help from, a fellow student.
Whom does the master’s programme suit?
Elli: The program is suitable for those who are interested in natural sciences and life sciences.
Hassan: The programme suits everybody who is interested in biology. The programme offers a wide range of courses, allowing you to explore many subjects.
Is a compulsory internship included in the master’s programme?
There is no compulsory internship included, but many students actively seek elective internships in research laboratories and other professional environments to gain practical experience, build networks, and strengthen their future career opportunities.
Elli: I was at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institutet on a research internship for four months. I conducted a guided research project that included a report presented at the end. It was a nice overall experience. I also took an internship at the University of Helsinki.
Hassan: I’ve taken two internships and a two-month research traineeship that ended with presenting the work on a poster.
What would you like to do after graduation?
Hassan: I am going for a PhD in the same lab where I researched for my master’s thesis.
Elli: I do not plan to pursue a PhD, but I would like to work in the corporate world.
What is Helsinki like as a study city?
Elli: Helsinki is a lovely city, including for students. There are many events: you can find something weekly if you are active.
Hassan: Helsinki is such a nice student city, very different from where I come from. There is so much social life, from the student orientation week onwards. There are always happenings and events where you can meet new people.
What is it like to study at University of Helsinki?
Hassan: I really like studying here. The University allows us to explore, and there are many events and guest lectures. It is great to be able to network outside your own field.
What would you like to say to someone considering applying for the programme?
Elli: I recommend applying, as the studies seem to have gone by really quickly, and I have enjoyed them.
Hassan: Studying in this programme is one of the best choices I’ve made in my life. I’d like to encourage you to apply if you want to learn multiple things and experience other methods, other possibilities.
What is the breakthrough in your life or studies?
Elli: Breakthroughs include the internships in Stockholm and Helsinki. They brought me confidence and belief in my own abilities.
Hassan: The possibility of working in different labs has made me grow as a scientist. That is a breakthrough.
When have you felt proud during your studies, and why?
Elli: I am proud to have successfully completed all my studies with good grades.
Hassan: Last week, I presented my thesis at the symposium. It felt so fulfilling to show what I have worked with in the last six months. My family was there, as well as others who were not scientifically educated. I felt proud that I could answer questions in a way that everybody could understand.
